Day 6

CULLODEN, CLAVA CAIRNS AND INVERNESS

Outlander fans who recognised Urqhart Castle from the time-travelling TV series, will love a trip to Culloden Battlefield. Children will love the interactive Visitor Experience and the adventure of running and playing on the site of the last pitched battle to take place on British soil. Just 20 minutes from Nairn, the exciting and educational trip to Culloden can easily be made in a morning. Nearby Clava Cairns, set on a terrace above the River Nairn, is an ancient burial ground where you can visit chambered cairns. One of Scotland’s most evocative prehistoric site, Clava also played an important role in the Outlander series.

Culloden Wood, next to the Battlefield, has clearly marked trails and is a great place to walk, run or cycle. Here you will also find the eerie St Mary’s Well, an ancient ‘Clootie Well’, where people have been leaving torn scraps of cloth as a healing charm since pre-Christian times.

After a few hours spent exploring history, you can relax with a short trip to Inverness for shopping or head back to Nairn to enjoy for ‘me time’ on your favourite Highland beach.
