Loch Ness

19 miles west of Nairn

Loch Ness is the setting for one of the world’s biggest unsolved mysteries. It has also become one of the world’s best-known freshwater lochs since Nessie was first spotted on the loch by a local keeper in 1933.

Even if you don’t spot Nessie, you’ll enjoy a tour around the loch in the awesome grandeur of the Great Glen and the Caledonian Canal , which links the Moray Firth and North Sea to the west coast. You can take a cruise on the loch or spend a holiday aboard one of the many charter boats available. Be sure to visit Urquhart Castle, now owned by Historic Scotland, on the shores of the loch.
