Day Trip To The South

Route 6:
Take the A939 across Dava Moor, continue on the A939 to Grantown-on-Spey, A95 via Dulnain Bridge to Aviemore and the Coylumbridge/Loch Morlich road to the Cairngorms. Return on the B9153 to Carrbridge, A938 towards Duthil and the B9007 across the Dava, picking up the A939 to return to Nairn.

Visit:
Drive across mystical Dava Moor, past ‘the loch of trouble’ – Lochindorb. Its ruined castle was once used as a prison and was one of the hideouts of the Wolf of Badenoch.

Visit Grantown-on-Spey, the capital of Strathspey, where Queen Victoria was tempted to build her summer residence before deciding on Balmoral. Just outside the town you will find visitor facilities for Strathaird Salmon, Revack Estate Garden Centre and Craggan Golf and Fishery Centre. At Dulnain Bridge , the renowned Speyside Heather Garden and Visitor Centre specialises in alpine plants and clootie dumplings.

Cairngorm Mountain Range – ’s premier ski centre is less than an hour’s drive from Nairn. A new funicular railway is an added bonus for visitors. The cable railway carriages take six minutes to ascend 3,600 feet but will be slightly longer in summer to give visitors the chance to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

The Glenmore Forest at the foot of the mountains contains way-marked paths taking the walker on a variety of trails across differing terrain with fresh flowing burns and little lochans to enjoy.

Loch Morlich, at the foot of the Cairngorms, offers a range of non-motorised water sport activities.

Catch a steam train on the Strathspey Railway from Aviemore to Boat of Garten - a 15 minute trip.

At Boat of Garten, famous for its golf course, a visit to the RSPB reserve and osprey hide is recommended.

Carrbridge - Landmark Visitor Centre is a popular venue, particularly for young families.
